Plot Summary:

Guilty pleasures dont come more guilty than The A-Team, televisions only tongue-in-cheek drama about the exploits of renegade Vietnam vets. The primetime series 1983 debut season, gathered here on The A-Team Season One, was intentionally ludicrous, encouraging viewers to enjoy sundry talents of a colorful cast and laugh off storylines perhaps sillier than those on Charlies Angels. Co-created by Stephen J. Cannell (Wiseguy) and Frank Lupo (Hunter), The A-Team introduced Lt. Col. John Hannibal Smith (George Peppard), the cocksure leader of a band of fugitive American soldiers framed for a crime in Vietnam and now thriving in Los Angeles. Hiring themselves out as soldiers of fortune, Hannibals crew--including Lt. Templeton Face Peck (baby-faced Tim Dunigan in the pilot, Dirk Benedict thereafter), Sgt. Bosco Albert B.A. (for Bad Attitude) Baracus (Mr. T, outfitted with his trademark gold), and, most comically, Capt. H.M. Howling Mad Murdock (Dwight Schultz)--assist (mostly) ordinary people having a problem with bad guys. The A-Team ostensibly charges large fees, but much of the time the guys seem to be doing pro bono work for the helpless. Season One highlights include Children of Jamestown, starring John Saxon as a Jim Jones-like religious cult leader who captures Hannibal, Face, B.A., and first-season sidekick Amy Triple A Allen (Melinda Culea). While the resourceful group invents a super-weapon out of farm equipment, crazy Murdock commandeers a helicopter and dynamite. Also good is A Small and Deadly War, featuring Dean Stockwell as one of several uncontrolled L.A. cops committing murder-for-hire. The Out-of-Towners takes a page from the Death Wish movie series with a story about New York City shop owners harassed by a protection racketeer (Yaphet Kotto). Hannibal and company retaliate with machine guns (no one is ever seen killed in this series) and, more effectively, public humiliation of the villain. The best thing about The A-Team is the relationship between the four offbeat heroes, who may not always like each other (B.A. usually looks as if hed like to leave Murdock in a shallow grave) but get the job done expertly.

Plot Summary:

Though often and unfairly dismissed as a Quantum Leap clone, the Fox TV series Sliders earned a substantial fan base thanks to its intriguing central premise--the existence of multiple alternate realities--and impressive special effects, both of which get a fine showcase in this six-disc DVD set. Jerry OConnell leads the appealing cast as a college student who accidentally discovers a portal into alternate dimensions with the help of his professor (Lord of the Rings John Rhys-Davies), a spunky Girl Friday (Sabrina Lloyd), and a soul crooner (Cleavant Derricks), OConnell encounters a host of strange parallel Earths, including a British-ruled United States and one where dinosaurs roam a national park. All nine episodes of the 1995 debut season and the 12-episode second season from 96, as well as the pilot from 95, are included in the aesthetically impressive set extras, however, are limited to commentary by creators Tracy Torme and Robert K. Weiss on the pilot episode, and a making-of featurette with OConnell and Derricks.

That potentially deadly triangle--drug lords, addiction, and bioterrorism on a massive scale--sets the 24-hour clock ticking in a tight, action-packed plot involving a potential traitor in CTUs midst the return of TVs greatest villainesses in Nina Meyers (Sarah Clarke) and former First Lady Sherry Palmer (Penny Johnson Jerald) a troubled romance between Kim and Jacks new partner Chase (James Badge Dale) and a scandalized reelection campaign by president David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), who monitors CTU as they struggle to (literally) save the day. The intricately woven subplots that are 24s greatest strength are masterfully developed here, and character arcs are equally strong, especially among CTU staffers Tony (Carlos Bernard) and his wife Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) CTU director Ryan Chappelle (Paul Schulze), who is season 3s tragic bargaining chip and the annoying but well-intentioned Chloe OBrian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who makes pivotal contributions with by-the-book efficiency. Its 24s superior casting that overcomes the series occasional lapses in credibility, and season 3s twists make marathon viewing a nerve-wracking delight. By the time its all over, 24 once again leaves you gratefully exhausted. As always, Sutherland anchors the series in the role he was born to play. When Jack takes a private moment to release 24 hours worth of near-fatal tension and psychological anguish, Sutherland proves that 24s dramatic priorities are as important as its thriller momentum. DVD extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes (about the prison break sequence, climactic F-18 Hornet air-strike, and real-life bio-weaponry) that pay welcome tribute to the series hard-working crew, who create Emmy-worthy television under pressures as intense as 24 itself.
